Rope Rescue

Level 1 - For the Follower

Learn the fundamentals of rope rescue, focusing on your role as a lead belayer. This course is targeted at those beginning to learn rope rescue from the perspective of someone who follows pitches on a multipitch climb or lead belays in a crag setting.

Level 2 - For the Leader

Building on the previous rope rescue skills, this clinic will cover what to do if the follower is injured on a multipitch climb. This course is best taken in combination with our rope rescue for the lead belayer course.

What You’ll Learn

Level 1

Tieing off the belay device

We'll talk about the various ways to go hands free with a tube style and assisted braking device so that you can call for help or initiate a rescue.

Transferring the load from yourself to a ground anchor

Once you've tied off the belay device we'll learn how to get ourselves out of the system so that we can move on to further steps such as getting help or administering first aid.

Ascending and descending a rope

This is how to climb a rope once it has been secured to an anchor so that you can assess the injuries of the leader and administer first aid.

Level 2

Raising a climber

We'll start with a 3:1 system and learn how to add mechanical advantage to raise a climber when this isn’t enough.

Lowering a climber

We’ll discuss how to lower a climber when belaying from the top, and how we can do so when they are unable to unweight the climbing rope.

Tandem Rappel

We’ll learn how to rappel with an injured partner, so that one person can control the rappel for both team members.

Counterbalance Rappel

We’ll learn what to do if your partner is unresponsive on the pitch below you, including going down to assess the situation and continuing down to the ground.
